Actives

Actives are the primary ingredients responsible for the product’s disinfecting properties. The selection of actives varies depending on the product’s purpose.

For examples, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are common actives in hand sanitizers and some surface disinfectants. In healthcare settings, other actives like benzalkonium chloride, quaternary ammonium compounds, enzymes, glutaraldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and peracetic acid may be used in high-level disinfectants for medical devices.

Excipients

Excipients: Excipients are secondary ingredients that provide physical properties and additional key attributes to the product without compromising its efficacy. We consider various excipients:

  • Surfactants: Different types of surfactants offer distinct properties, such as foam enhancement, low-foam properties, solubilization, wetting, and dispersing capabilities.
  • Thickener: Thickening agents are used to adjust the product’s viscosity, making it less fluid or even gel-like.
  • Corrosion Inhibitors: These ingredients help prevent metal corrosion when the disinfectant is applied to surfaces.
  • pH Adjusters: pH adjustment is essential to maintain the optimal pH range for the actives to function effectively. Enzymatic disinfectants often require buffering to preserve enzyme activity.
  • Fragrance/Perfume: Fragrances are added to provide a pleasant odor to the product.
  • Coloring Agents: Coloring agents may be used to give the product a specific appearance.
